Our guest speaker this year was Penny Barker. Penny was born in Houston and grew up a couple of hours north of there in Midway, Texas, where she now lives. She’s been married to Rodney for 16 years. Penny graduated from Abilene Christian University in 2000. She attends Centerville church of Christ where she teaches Bible classes and participates in Ladies' Class and Gospel Meetings. She also attends the Ladies' Class of Hwy 90 church of Christ in Madisonville. She has three boys: Alec, Wilson and Avery. She keeps home, kids, and husband, happily. She also volunteers for a local hospital as president of the auxiliary. She also volunteers as secretary of her local Right to Life chapter. When Avery begins school in the fall, she hopes to volunteer with the library and drive for the elderly. She and her middle son train for and run a distance race each year. She also has two horses and she hopes to eventually endurance race one of them. She likes to sew, play piano and flute, scrapbook, read, and exercise.
WENDY - Co-Director - I am a wife, mother, keeper of the home, and homeschool mom. I enjoy staying at home with my four little girls, teaching the oldest (and cuddling with all) to read books. I live north of Charlottesville , Virginia (where I also grew up), and I worship with the saints at Orange Community church of Christ. Friday nights are devoted to Bible studies with the church at Rivanna River. I have taught Bible class on Wednesday nights and I enjoy preparing dinner for Friday night Bible studies. I love reading, being with kids, serving God and my family, taking pictures, and crafting. This is my third year with Camp COMMIT!
CHRISTA - Co-Director - I'm the mother of my children! That pretty much defines this season of my life. I love being the mom of a big, busy bunch of kids. I have 3 boys and 3 girls, ages 8 to 23, with my first grandchild due in May! We have enjoyed living in Virginia for 8 years. I don't have any "spare time hobbies" because I don't have any spare time right now, but if I did, I would read, work on remodeling our house, and visit with deaf people to improve my sign language skills. I am very excited about the opportunity "Camp COMMIT!" gives me to share my experiences about the blessings of being a fulltime mother and helpmeet. This is my third year with Camp COMMIT! I worship with the Spotsylvania church of Christ.
TAMMY - Crafts & Activities - I am married and have 2 girls, ages 15 and 18. I am a native of Pensacola, Florida, where I lived most of my life, before moving to Fredericksburg, VA, 9 years ago. I am a 5th Grade Teacher Assistant at Fredericksburg Christian School. I attend Fredericksburg church of Christ, where I teach Sunday school, Children's Bible Hour, and Wednesday evening Bible class, as well as being involved in Lads to Leaders and Leaderettes and the Homeless Ministry. Some things I enjoy doing are spending time with my family, sewing, reading, and playing volleyball. This is my third year with Camp COMMIT!
JEANNE - Married to Ken for 28 years, two children (Carolyn 16 & Jared 18), all are Christians. I stayed at home with my children untill they were both in school before I started to work ... only when they were in school (I am still using it as an excuse not to go to work!). I enjoy bad puns and weird humor. I like to sew and bake (esp. desserts!!!!). And couponing is a major hobby. I also have lots of spare time and a high energy level ... and so it is I have committed myself to this blessed endeavor. This is my third year with Camp COMMIT! I worship with the Rugby church of Christ in Charlottesville.
MKIYAH - Modesty - I have been married 9 years to a wonderful man who recently returned from his second tour of duty in Iraq. I have three young boys. I work part time and take classes to further my work in the medical field. I enjoy home decorating projects, and I am teaching my family Spanish. I love to help with the girls at church and I have worked with the Venture kids at church. This is my third year with Camp COMMIT! I worship with the Spotsylvania church of Christ.
